| Figure 1 : Sandy |
Sandy has lived on a farm her whole life. She loves working on the farm, and she especially loves working with the animals. Her small town has more animals than people. Sandy is a little nervous about going to New York City. She knows that the big city has a lot of people in it, more people than she can ever imagine. She knows that this adventure will be completely new, even though she is nervous, she's mostly excited.
The day is finally here, Sandy and her family are going to New York City! Sandy said goodbye to all her animals, she has never been away from them for not even a day. She said goodbye to her best friend, Maria, and promised to buy her something special from the city. Sandy and Maria have been friends for as long as Sandy can remember. Maria is Sandy's closest neighbor who lives about 10 miles from her. One day they hope that they can explore the city together.
Sandy's bag is all packed, her and her family are on the way to the train station. Sandy's father purchased the train tickets, so now it's time to board the train. (Figure 2) Sandy loved the train ride so much. She was lucky enough to get the window seat, she got to see the many trees turn into many streets and big buildings. Sandy knew that she was finally in the city.

They get off the train and they are already surrounded by so many people. Sandy held her parents' hands extra tight. This was all new to her. They step out of the train station and there's just so much noise! Sandy is amazed. So many sounds, cars, lights. It was so much to take in. This was nothing like her small home town.

Sandy and her family went to so many places throughout the day. She went to Times Square, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and so much more. Her favorite was the Empire State building. The Empire State building is huge, Sandy was able to go to the very top. She loved seeing the city below her. She can't wait to show Maria the pictures she took. The day went by so quick, it is now time for Sandy to go back to the hotel and leave for home in the morning.

She is upset about leaving, but ready to go home. On the train she tells her parents all her favorite parts of the city. She realizes how different the city is to her town. In the city, people live so close to each other that they're in the same buildings. She thinks how amazing it would be if her and Maria lived in the same building instead of ten miles apart. When Sandy was walking the streets with her parents, she noticed all the different people. Different languages were being spoken, people were singing and playing instruments at every corner. The city was like another world.
Sandy has learned so much from her experience in the city. It was like being a part of another world. She learned that these two places, the city, and her hometown are completely different. The one thing that they do have in common though, is that these places are both homes to many people. Sandy's parents decided that they will make this a tradition, they will visit the city every year.
Sandy's journey is a very important lesson. She traveled to somewhere new. She didn't know what she expected, but she was happy she went. We live in an amazing world. There is so much to see and learn. Each town in the United States is different than your own. This story is to show you that everywhere is different and it's important for us to remember this. Everyone is born into their own family, town, city, state, and country.
