| Figure 1: Police Officer Gary |
"WEEEE WOOOO WEEEE WOOOO!" Do you guys recognize this siren? If you said it is a police car, you are correct! Police have hard jobs, and all of you know this. Every day they have to stop the bad guys from doing bad things. It is hard for each and every policeman, but it is very hard for a policeman named Gary. Gary (figure 1) is a police officer in a neighborhood where lots of shootings happen. There is a type of shooting called a drive-by, which is when the bad guys drive by in a black car with black windows, and shoot their gun at another person (1). Everyone should know that police officers are there to protect you from these types of things. But there is a way for you to help out to!!
Neighborhood Watch!
There are a few things you kids can do. You can do a neighborhood watch program run by Officer Gary. He will come talk to you about ways to stop the bad guys from doing bad things in your neighborhoods. One thing you can do is if you see an all black car, do not approach it. Immediately call 9-1-1, which everyone should know is to call Officer Gary and the rest of the police. Officer Gary will come to the scene as fast as he can and try to stop the bad guy. It is very very important that you tell Officer Gary exactly what you saw so he can track him down. By getting there as fast as he can, Officer Gary can then track down the bad guy and try to get him to to say why he did the bad thing (2). Now that you have got Officer Gary at the scene with the bad guy, you have successfully completed the neighborhood watch program!

Let's say that you are outside having fun and the black suspicious car comes by your house... First you run inside and dial that same number, 9-1-1. Then, make sure the car is gone, and go set up cones around your house and street to block the car in. It allows Officer Gary to catch the bad guy quicker. This will make the bad guy upset, and make him put his hands up which ends in getting arrested (3).
You have now completed another step in helping Officer Gary keep the bad guys from shooting guns at random people. Officer Gary can now keep more bad guys off the street thanks to your help.
What To Do If You Hear Gunshots
Time To Tell Your Friends!
In order to keep the bad guys off the street, you need to tell all your friends about neighborhood watch. While doing this, tell them about the certificate you got for helping out Officer Gary. All your friends will definitely think its cool to be helping out the police. Stopping all the bad guys is what we want to happen, and by telling your friends, we are one step closer to stopping it.
