Interracial Couples

(1) Figure 1 Interracial Couple

Do you have a friend whose mom is one color and dad is another color? This is called an interracial couple. They are called this because both of the people are different races. For example, if your friend's mom is Asian and your friend's dad is black, they are an interracial couple. There are a bunch of other kinds as well like having one black person and one white person or one Hispanic person and one white person. If your parents are both the same color, they are not an interracial couple.

(2) Figure 2 M&M's

You can think of a bag of M&M's to understand. There are many different colors, just like people. There are many reds, blues, browns, greens, oranges, and yellows. Sometimes the colors can mix and the red M&M's don't always have to go with other reds, they can also go with a blue, green, or any other color M&M! This is the same with people. You may not see many interracial couples depending where you live, but there are a lot of these couples around.

Back then, people were not allowed to date or marry another person with a different race in the United States. This was because of slavery, when black people were treated very bad by white people and had to work for them. If someone was white, they had to be with a white person and if someone was black, they had to be with a black person. This is because they would get into trouble with the police if they didn't. The police would send many couples to jail for this because it was a bad thing at the time. There was even a law, something that tells people they can't do something, about interracial couples. These laws were called (4) anti-miscegenation laws, which is a big word that means you can only be with someone who is the same color skin as you or else you will get into trouble.

(3) Figure 3 Interracial Couple
That doesn't sound fair, does it? One really known interracial couple agreed. They were the Loving's and they lived in Virginia. Mildred Jeter was a black woman and Richard Loving was a white man. They did not understand why their marriage was illegal, or not allowed. They went to court which is where people go when they aren't following laws, and tried to make their marriage legal. (4) The Loving's got the court to agree with them. Because this happened, 16 other states had to get rid of the law too. This couple changed the history! Now, people of different races can happily ðŸ˜Š be together.
